The Federal Government has initiated an investigation into the conduct of a West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at Unity Secondary School, Asaba, where students were reportedly made to write their exams at night using torchlights.

A viral video circulating on social media platforms showed students sitting for their exams under poor lighting conditions, prompting widespread outrage and condemnation from the public and educational stakeholders.

Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, described the incident as “totally unacceptable” and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring conducive environments for academic activities.

The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Delta State Government and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has commenced a thorough investigation to ascertain the circumstances that led to the incident and to implement corrective measures.

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) also expressed its dismay, labeling the situation as a “national disgrace” and calling for accountability from the relevant authorities.

The outcome of the investigation will be made public, and the government has assured that necessary steps will be taken to prevent a recurrence of such incidents, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the education sector.
