A tragic incident unfolded in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State on May 25, 2025, when a mob attacked the Rano Divisional Police Headquarters, resulting in the death of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), M.A. Baba, and the destruction of the police station.
The unrest was sparked by the arrest of a motorcycle mechanic, Abdullahi Musa, who was detained for reckless and dangerous riding. While in custody, Musa exhibited signs of weakness and was taken to Rano General Hospital, where he died on May 26. The community, suspecting foul play and alleging that Musa was tortured to death, retaliated by storming the police station. During the attack, the mob set parts of the station and two vehicles ablaze, destroyed ten other vehicles, and severely injured DPO Baba, who later succumbed to his injuries at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.
Kano State Police Commissioner, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, visited the scene and the Emir of Rano to assess the situation. The police have arrested 27 suspects in connection with the incident and have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the causes and hold those responsible accountable. The Command has urged residents to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without interference.
