Host communities in Delta State, Nigeria, are voicing strong grievances against Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), alleging neglect in employment opportunities and developmental initiatives. The KOMBOT group, representing graduates from the Egbema, Gbaramatu, and Ogulagha kingdoms, claims that despite submitting names for a Chevron recruitment exercise in late 2024, the company has not responded. They warn of impending protests that could disrupt Chevron’s operations if their concerns remain unaddressed .
Similarly, the Itsekiri Interest Group (IIG) criticizes Chevron for sidelining host communities in favor of self-serving leaders, leading to increased youth unemployment and potential unrest. They accuse the company of violating Nigeria’s Local Content Law by not hiring locally and of favoring certain leaders with contracts, thereby marginalizing the broader community .
In response to these escalating tensions, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has intervened, directing Chevron and the affected communities to collaborate on expanding the Board of Trustees for the Host Communities Development Trust and to ensure equitable representation. This move aims to foster transparency and adherence to the Petroleum Industry Act .
