The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced a 21-day strike notice to the Federal Government, citing unresolved issues that have persisted for over six months. This development follows a series of unfulfilled promises and agreements dating back to 2021, including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and the payment of withheld salaries.

ASUU’s demands encompass several critical areas:

  • Unpaid Salaries: Lecturers have not received their earned academic allowances and salaries for sabbaticals and part-time appointments.
  • Renegotiation of 2009 Agreement: The union seeks the conclusion of the renegotiation process based on the Nimi Briggs Committee’s draft agreement of 2021.
  • University Funding: There is a call for the release of revitalization funds to improve infrastructure and resources in public universities.
  • University Autonomy: ASUU expresses concern over the erosion of autonomy in public universities, urging the government to uphold the independence of these institutions.

ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, has reiterated the union’s commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian students and ensuring the quality of education. However, he emphasized that the government must fulfill its promises to avoid industrial action.
The outcome of the upcoming meeting between ASUU and the Federal Government will be crucial in determining whether the planned strike will proceed. Stakeholders, including students and parents, are advised to stay informed and prepared for any developments.
