First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has called on graduates of Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, to apply their acquired knowledge towards the advancement of Nigeria. Speaking through Engineer Kayode Olubunmi Ojo, who represented her at the university’s 35th convocation ceremony, she emphasized the importance of giving back to the institution and contributing meaningfully to society.
The convocation marked AFUED’s first since its transition from a college to a university, celebrating the achievements of 18,825 graduates across six academic sessions. The degrees conferred included 12,556 first degrees, 6,269 Nigerian Certificates in Education (NCE), and 1,501 diplomas.
In recognition of her contributions to education and society, Senator Tinubu was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science in Education. Other honorees included the Osemawe of Ondo Kingdom, Oba Victor Kiladejo, and Professor Toyin Falola of the University of Texas at Austin. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Professor Adebayo Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to enhancing funding for tertiary institutions. He acknowledged the challenges faced by universities, including infrastructural deficits and manpower shortages, and assured that steps are being taken to address these issues.
Acting Vice-Chancellor of AFUED, Professor Samuel Akintunde, highlighted the institution’s achievements despite financial constraints, noting that all progress has been made through internally generated revenue. He appealed for federal support to further develop the university’s infrastructure and academic programs.
The convocation ceremony also featured a lecture by Professor Toyin Falola titled “The Advent of Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Nigerian Tertiary Education,” underscoring the importance of innovation in the country’s educational landscape.
