The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has summoned controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, following a viral video in which he allegedly confessed to engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
In the video, Speed Darlington described an encounter with a minor, sparking widespread outrage and prompting the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) to refer the matter to NAPTIP for further investigation.
NAPTIP issued an official summons on May 28, 2025, requesting the singer to appear at their headquarters in Abuja on Friday, May 30, 2025, by 9 a.m. The agency emphasized that failure to comply may lead to further legal action.
In response to the backlash, Speed Darlington released another video claiming his earlier statements were a publicity stunt to promote his new song. He apologized to those offended by his remarks.
NAPTIP has initiated a full investigation into the matter, analyzing the viral video and other related content. The agency stated that the actions, if substantiated, could constitute offenses under the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act (TIPPEA) 2015 and the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015.
The incident has sparked significant public discourse on social media, with many Nigerians expressing outrage and calling for accountability.
