In a surprising political twist, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Governor Eno, who has been a key figure within the PDP since his emergence in 2023, attributed his defection to what he described as a “deep admiration” for the leadership style and policy direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during a press briefing in Uyo, the state capital, Governor Eno expressed confidence in Tinubu’s ability to reposition Nigeria and deliver on promises of national growth, economic recovery, and unity.
“Leadership is about vision, courage, and commitment to the people. I’ve watched President Tinubu lead with intentionality and boldness. For me, it’s not about party lines anymore—it’s about progress,” he said.
The defection marks a significant political shift in the South-South region, traditionally a stronghold of the PDP. Eno’s exit from the party could potentially weaken PDP’s hold in Akwa Ibom State ahead of future elections, while bolstering APC’s growing influence in the Niger Delta.
Sources within the APC confirm that talks have been ongoing for months, but Governor Eno’s final decision reportedly followed a series of closed-door meetings with key party leaders and federal officials.
While PDP leadership is yet to issue an official response, political observers say this development is likely to trigger realignments across the region, as party loyalties face increasing pressure from ideological and strategic considerations.
