The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has formally announced the commencement of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah for the year 1446 AH. According to his declaration, the first day of Dhul Hijjah fell on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, marking a significant moment for Muslims across Nigeria and beyond.

This announcement is pivotal as Dhul Hijjah is the twelfth and final month in the Islamic lunar calendar, a period noted for the sacred pilgrimage to Mecca, known as Hajj, and the celebration of Eid-el-Kabir (also called Eid al-Adha). The declaration allows Muslim communities to prepare spiritually and logistically for these important religious observances.

Following the Sultan’s declaration, Eid-el-Kabir is expected to be celebrated on Friday, June 6, 2025. This festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command, symbolizing faith, devotion, and charity.

The Sultan’s announcement holds great significance for Muslims in Nigeria, helping to unify the observance of these sacred days nationwide. It also guides religious leaders, families, and communities in planning prayers, festivities, and charitable activities during this holy period.

The Sultan of Sokoto, regarded as a leading spiritual figure in Nigeria’s Muslim community, consistently plays a key role in moon sightings and the official determination of Islamic months, ensuring alignment with traditional and religious guidelines.

As Muslims prepare for Dhul Hijjah and Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, the Sultan’s declaration serves as a reminder of the values of faith, sacrifice, and unity that define this blessed time in the Islamic calendar.
