In a firm declaration, Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has dismissed concerns that Nigeria is veering toward a one-party system. Speaking during the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) North Central Zonal Congress in Jos, Plateau State, Moro emphasized the resilience of the PDP and its commitment to Nigeria’s democratic principles.
“I have no fear of Nigeria becoming a one-party state. Not at all. I don’t believe that’s a likely outcome,” Moro stated. He acknowledged that while defections have a ripple effect, the PDP is poised to regroup and emerge stronger.
Moro highlighted the ongoing efforts within the PDP to rejuvenate its leadership structure, noting that activities leading up to the National Convention are designed to elect new leaders from the ward to the national level. “This process will breathe new life into the PDP,” he asserted.
The Senate Minority Leader also addressed the importance of a vibrant opposition in a healthy democracy. He warned against celebrating the weakening of opposition parties, stating that such trends threaten democratic governance and could tilt the country dangerously towards a one-party system.
Moro reaffirmed the PDP’s openness to forming coalitions ahead of the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that any such efforts should be party-driven. “The PDP’s umbrella is big enough to accommodate all persons desirous of a coalition. The PDP should drive the coalition, if and when it becomes necessary,” he added.
With these statements, Senator Abba Moro underscores the PDP’s determination to remain a formidable force in Nigeria’s political landscape, committed to upholding democratic values and providing a credible alternative to the ruling party.
