On May 30, 2025, President Donald Trump hosted a farewell event in the Oval Office to honor Elon Musk’s departure from his role as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The ceremony marked the end of Musk’s 130-day tenure as a special government employee, during which he led efforts to streamline federal operations and reduce government spending.

During the event, President Trump presented Musk with a symbolic golden key, commending his contributions to the administration’s efficiency initiatives. “Elon has brought about colossal change,” Trump remarked, highlighting the significant cost savings achieved under Musk’s leadership. Although Musk’s original goal was to cut $2 trillion in federal spending, the DOGE office reported savings of approximately $150 billion. Despite not meeting the initial target, Trump praised the efforts as a substantial step toward reducing government waste.

Musk appeared at the press conference wearing a “Dogefather” T-shirt and a DOGE cap, embodying the informal yet impactful nature of his role. Notably, he sported a black eye, which he attributed to playful roughhousing with his five-year-old son, “Lil X.” “I said go ahead and punch me in the face, and he did,” Musk explained, addressing the media’s curiosity.

Despite stepping down from his official position, Musk indicated that he would continue to support the DOGE team as an informal advisor. “This is not an end but a new beginning for DOGE,” he stated, expressing confidence in the office’s ongoing mission to enhance government efficiency. Trump echoed this sentiment, suggesting that Musk’s influence would persist and hinting at potential future collaborations.

Musk’s tenure at DOGE was marked by significant reforms, including the restructuring of federal agencies and the implementation of cost-cutting measures. His approach, while lauded by some for its boldness, also faced criticism for its rapid execution and the impact on various government programs. Nevertheless, the administration maintained that these changes were necessary to eliminate inefficiencies and modernize federal operations.

As Musk transitions back to focus on his business ventures, including SpaceX and Tesla, his brief but impactful stint in government service leaves a lasting imprint on the Trump administration’s legacy of challenging traditional bureaucratic norms.
